St. David’s Day Weekend in North Cornelly

This time last week, our Coordinator Beth and friend Jess were in sunny North Cornelly, celebrating St. David’s Day with the family, friends, and community of Darlene Cogbill, who sadly passed away with Sporadic CJD in May 2024.

Months earlier, Ian Cogbill had invited Beth to attend a special Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant (St. David’s Day) concert—held, of course, on March 1st. Hosted by the Kenfig Hill Male Voice Choir, the evening featured rousing and anthemic performances, alongside stunning contributions from Afanté Ladies Choir and violinist Sage Taylor. The audience was also treated to a beautiful duet by Kathryn Treharne and Kian Hamer-Davis, with piano accompaniment throughout by the incredibly talented Rachel Starritt.

The choir chose to raise money for the CJD Support Network, and thanks to their hard work and the generosity of those who attended, an amazing £700 was raised on the night!

The fundraising continued on Sunday, March 2nd, when Ian hosted his monthly Cog’s Clever Quiz at the New House Inn pub. Beth joined his family’s team (though they didn’t win!) and had the chance to meet the wonderful staff and patrons, including landlady Colleen. With an additional £300 raised from the quiz, the weekend was a resounding success.

Beth shared her gratitude:

“Jess and I were blown away by the welcome we received from Ian, his family, friends, and the wider community—their generosity and warmth are a true tribute to Ian’s beloved wife, Darlene. It was a privilege to meet the families of others from the surrounding area who have also been sadly lost to CJD, including Robert Harding’s family, who attended the concert, and Brenda, daughter of Glenys Jones, who passed away in the 1980s, and is a regular at Ian’s quiz. I look forward to returning to North Cornelly in the future—and hopefully winning Cog’s Quiz next time!”

A huge thank you to Ian, the choirs, musicians, the New House Inn, and everyone who contributed to this incredible weekend of fundraising and remembrance. Your kindness and support make a real difference.
