UK international risk status for BSE downgraded

The UK’s risk rating status for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) has been downgraded to negligible by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).Click HERE to read the UK Government’s press release which shares more information about this decision and the impact it is expected to have on trade. The reclassification reflects decades of stringent controls and world-leading biosecurity standards – there have been no cases of vCJD in the UK since the last person died in 2016 and that vCJD has never been identified in anyone in the UK born after 1989 when important food protection measures were introduced. BSE remains a notifiable animal disease, and all livestock keepers are required by law to report suspected cases.
